What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Atlanta, GA

Published: September 15, 2005

To the Editor:

While Saint Joseph’s Health System’s Mercy Care Services is a wonderful, wonderful program indeed, I was quite surprised (as were many Grady employees) to read in The Georgia Bulletin (“Georgia Catholics Respond To Gulf Coast Crisis” Sept. 8) that it is “Atlanta’s only health-care provider for the homeless.” Correction: Grady Health System, one of the nation’s largest public health systems based here in Atlanta, provides close to $200 million in care for the homeless, uninsured and underserved each year.

Editor’s note: To clarify, Saint Joseph’s Health System’s Mercy Care Services is the only health care agency for the homeless in Atlanta that is contracted and funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration/Bureau of Primary Health Care.
