What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Ellijay

Published: September 1, 2005

To the Editor:

I was saddened when I returned from a trip visiting my daughter and family to learn that my dear friend and colleague Dick Narey had passed away. I enjoyed reading Archbishop Gregory’s editorial regarding Dick and his work with the Diaconate Formation Program for the Atlanta Archdiocese. In the editorial our archbishop states he never met Dick.

I fortunately had the blessing of meeting Dick back in 1984 when my family and I moved to the Atlanta area. I worked with Dick Narey, Walt Bedard, Al Gallagher, Al Mitchell and others as a member of the Atlanta Archdiocese Permanent Diaconate Board from 1985-1993. I was the facilitator of the wives program. I saw firsthand how Dick lived his life following Christ and serving His church. Dick’s walk with the Lord is an example and legacy to all.

Dick knew the ministry of the permanent deacon was one of service. Dick loved the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings as well as his lovely wife Marjorie and their family. I never met a man with such honor, integrity and great leadership. After retirement from a busy career, Dick worked many long hours to help form the diaconate program as we now have established in Atlanta.

Many of the deacons and their wives can attest to the legacy of service and dedication Dick gave to the church of Atlanta in following God’s call. Dick as a deacon embraced the ministry of word, sacrament and service.

I give thanks and praise to God for having known this great man and for the opportunity I had to work along his side. We will miss you Dick!
