To the Editor:
The Georgia Bulletin’s front-page view of Sacred Heart’s rose window and pipe organ began a reverie that included years of checking to see what my beloved father was up to weekly in that organ loft. As a 20-plus year volunteer, he was proud to lend a hand by offering both operatic voice and musicianship for his Lord’s greater glory. Midnight Mass usually included lugging his cello up there as well, even as he had in Dresden, his original German home. Rudol Kratina agreed with St Cecelia that he who makes music for the Lord prays twice. Indeed, Sacred Heart became a welcoming spiritual home for him and his family when his Herz Jesu Kirche was effectively closed by the Nazis in 1938.
Thank you, Sacred Heart Church—and many more happy birthdays!
Fred Kratina, M.D., Gainesville, Fla.
