To the Editor:
Want a little clue as to just what might be wrong with the world today? First look at the picture on page 22 (“News Briefs”) in the June 23 issue of The Georgia Bulletin. It shows rich “boys” with their very expensive toys waiting for the pope to bless their Ferraris. Now go to the picture on the opposite page (23). Here you will see Sudanese children eating leaves torn from trees in order to stay alive.
No disrespect intended, but these two pictures remind me of the cartoon that shows the captain of the Titanic arranging deck chairs as the ship is in the process of sinking.
These two pictures show in no uncertain terms the contrast that surrounds each and every one of us in the world in which we live. I have no idea if these two pictures were placed side by side on purpose or just by chance. But no matter how they got there, I am glad they did. Maybe, just maybe, those that looked at these pictures and took a moment or two to digest what they saw may look at their own priorities and perhaps change them. If enough do, this old world may just be a little bit better place to call home.
