Vietnamese Community Celebrates Tet

Framed by “hoa mai,” a yellow blossom that represents the coming of spring, Msgr. Francis Pham Van Phuong, pastor of Our Lady of Vietnam Church, Riverdale, opens the special Mass celebrating the Vietnamese New Year, Tet, with a welcome to the main celebrant Archbishop-emeritus John F. Donoghue.

With anticipation and excitement, parishioners pick “lucky scrolls” from the tree following Mass. Each scroll is embossed with a Scripture verse one must try to adhere to during the year.

Preceded by the sound of firecrackers, the dragon makes its entrance, gyrating and swiftly moving to the sound of a beating drum. Under the huge costume are teenagers Hung Nguyen (front) and Hiep Duong (back).

Some of the more than 700 parishioners of Our Lady of Vietnam participate in the Eucharistic liturgy marking the Vietnamese New Year. In the background the words “Happy New Year” appear in Vietnamese and English.
