To the Editor:

The story about Mexican Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera’s objection to Arizona Proposition 200 (Georgia Bulletin, Jan. 27, 2005) revealed the myopic and one-way vision that Mexican authorities of all stripes seem to have on the immigration issue. They elevate scofflaw illegal immigrants to sainthood, even as they ignore the oppressive policies of their own government toward immigrating Salvadorans on their southern border, and toward their own citizens, leading to this mass emigration northward into our country in the first place. This is reminiscent of communist East Germany complaining that too many of their people were fleeing to the West. The causes are the same. Only in this case, Mexico views the emigration as a relief valve for unrest, much as the Mariel boatlift, as well as a cash cow for Vicente Fox’s government.

Mexico’s problem is not that the United States is stopping a tiny fraction of the millions who stream over our borders annually. It is that they allow no import of freedom and God’s justice into that benighted land. The bishops of Mexico would be well advised to put their own house in order, rather than looking for someone else to blame for their nation’s shortcomings.

Remember, there is no virtue in forced charity, which is the situation faced by the beleaguered and unwilling taxpayers of Arizona.
