What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Atlanta, GA

To the Editor:

The many events of Catholic Schools Week have reminded me once again how blessed we and our children are to be part of a Catholic school community. The schools and our relationship with them enable us to really live our faith and pass it on to our children.

We have schools where teachers foster an awareness of God and where Christmas is not about Santa Claus but the birth of Jesus. We have teachers who gently guide us parents to celebrate Jesus’ birthday with a cake and tone down the presence of Santa. We can send our children to schools where they are taught the true meaning of Easter.

We have schools where priests and Religious are on campus and in the classrooms. Our children are blessed with the opportunity to interact and form friendships with these amazing spiritual people. We can send them to schools where there are regular Masses and chapels in the buildings. Our children are growing up knowing that going to Mass is more than a Sunday thing.

And most importantly to me, we have schools where living your faith is encouraged and respected. Providing our children with a Catholic education will help them become future leaders in the church and in the community. There are so many wonderful Catholic schools. Consider making one a part of your family.
