Mount St. Mary’s Offers Two New Scholarships

Published: December 16, 2004

EMMITSBURG, Md.—Mount St. Mary’s University is offering two new merit-based scholarships this year: The Catholic Schools Employees’ Scholarship and the Bishop’s Scholarship Program.

The Bishop’s Scholarship Program gives the archbishop of Atlanta the opportunity to recognize the academic and community service achievements of a high school student in the archdiocese accepted to the Mount. The recipient will receive a $15,000 scholarship to attend the university.

“The Mount is nearing its third century of service to Catholic education in America,” said Mount President Thomas H. Powell. “This distinctive scholarship initiative reaffirms the historical bond between the Mount and the archdiocese, and highlights the importance of Catholic students making a difference in their parishes, their dioceses and their communities.”

The nominated student must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and must score an 1100 or above on the SAT, or have an ACT score of at least 24. Applicants should also demonstrate leadership and involvement in parish, school, and community activities. A completed application form should be submitted by Feb. 1, 2005.

Dioceses currently participating in the Bishop’s Scholarship Program include Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Arlington, Va., Atlanta, Harrisburg, Pa., and Bridgeport, Conn.

The Mount has also established the Catholic Schools Employees’ Scholarship to recognize the talents and dedication of teachers, administrators and staff in primary and secondary Catholic school systems throughout the United States.

“We have an obligation to reach out to help those who are committed to Catholic education, on both the elementary and secondary levels,” states Powell. “We also need to thank them for their tireless efforts and to ensure that their children will have an opportunity to attend a Catholic university.”

Applicants who qualify and are accepted to the Mount will receive a minimum $8,000 in scholarship money. Students already awarded an academic scholarship through the university will receive an additional $3,000 annually.

To be eligible for the Catholic Schools Employees’ Scholarship, a prospective student must have a parent who has been employed full-time for a minimum of three years by a Catholic elementary or secondary school.
