What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Archbishop Donoghue Elected Administrator

Published: December 16, 2004

ATLANTA—Archbishop John F. Donoghue will continue to administer the Archdiocese of Atlanta for several weeks, but with the new title of administrator.

Once the archbishop was informed officially Dec. 9 that Pope John Paul II had accepted his resignation, it became necessary under canon law for an administrator of the archdiocese to be elected. The College of Consultors of the archdiocese met at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 9 and elected Archbishop Donoghue as the administrator.

He will serve in that role until Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory is installed as the sixth archbishop of Atlanta in mid-January 2005.

Msgr. Paul Reynolds, chancellor of the archdiocese, presided at the meeting of the College of Consultors and certified that the meeting and vote were conducted in accord with the Code of Canon Law.
