To the Editor:
I was somewhat stumped at Earl H. Scott’s dislike of Father Gene Barrette’s article on Bill Cosby (The Georgia Bulletin, Nov. 4). As one who attends daily Mass, prays three-five hours per week before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and who deeply loves the Scriptures, the sacraments, the rosary, and the teachings of the Church, I’m not clear why I shouldn’t appreciate fun and excitement in anything else. Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. To raise up and appreciate someone who brings clean, wholesome, joyful entertainment to many—a rarity these days—would seem to me to be something that Jesus Himself would encourage. In reading Father Barrette’s article, I was reminded and uplifted by how “God works all things for the good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” (Rom 8:28) That Mr. Cosby could go on spreading joy after the tragic death of his son exemplifies a work of God. His comedy has the ability to touch the hearts of large numbers who may not set foot inside a church. Father Gene appreciated and shared this “Amazing Grace” with us all. I was very blessed by his article.
