Annual UGA Catholic Center Golf Tournament Held

ATHENS—The Catholic Center at the University of Georgia (UGA) hosted their third annual golf tournament on Sept. 28.

The Vince and Barbara Dooley Annual UGA Catholic Center Golf Tournament was held at the Jennings Mill Country Club. Proceeds from the event, which totaled more than $15,000, benefited Catholic Center- sponsored programs such as the Franciscan Helping Hands Outreach Program and Camp St. Francis, a summer camp experience for underprivileged children in the Athens area.

The Franciscan Helping Hands Outreach Program provides opportunities for the Catholic Center students to assist with projects that help the Athens community. Students participate in various events such as coaching soccer through the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services, tutoring students at Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela, and coaching children through Girls on the Run.

This year, the tournament was renamed in recognition of the contribution and service of Vince and Barbara Dooley to the Athens community. In their honor, scholarships will be awarded annually to enable low-income and at-risk children to participate in summer athletic camps at the University of Georgia.

Sixty-four golfers enjoyed a boxed lunch, door prizes, 18 holes of golf and dinner. Vince and Barbara Dooley and members of the UGA golf team took part in the day’s events.

The Athens community also responded to the event as more than 80 area businesses served as sponsors, donors for door prizes, and food and beverage donors. St. Mary’s Health Care System, Inc.,\ and Wachovia Securities, LLC, were the major sponsors and Athens Marine, Inc., was a hole-in-one sponsor.

For the past two years, the Knights of Columbus played a key role in the Catholic Center Golf Tournaments, helping to make them a huge success.
