Atlanta Boy Choir Continues Monastery Tradition

CONYERS—In its dedication to the performance of the great choral masterworks, the Atlanta Boy Choir will continue a 24-year local Christmas tradition when the group performs again in December at the Monastery of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit—this year in commemoration of the monastery’s 60th anniversary. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Hailed as one of the world’s finest boy choirs, the Atlanta Boy Choir has performed in many of the world’s great cathedrals and concert halls across North America and Europe. David R. White, the artistic director and conductor, leads the group and continues the choir’s tradition of preparing and performing the great masterworks of choral music. In addition to the music, the choir emphasizes, in a professional atmosphere, the education and cultural development of each choir member.

Since the choir was founded in 1957, over 5,000 boys have participated as members, representing various economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. The choir members have received the benefits of cultural and educational enrichment through the preparation and presentation of great music to audiences around the world. The diversity of the choir’s membership is equally matched by its broad repertoire ranging from the early liturgical composers such as Palestrina and Monteverdi to contemporary masterworks by Britten and Penderecki to specially commissioned works.

The Atlanta Boy Choir has appeared before presidents, popes, foreign dignitaries, crowned heads of state, and U.S. soldiers and has served both Atlanta and the United States as a cultural ambassador throughout Europe, Russia, Canada and Mexico. This year the choir toured Greece as part of the 2004 Cultural Olympiad.
