AACCW Convention Will Focus On Peace And Justice

ATLANTA—The Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women will hold its 48th annual convention Sept. 10-12 at the Holiday Inn Select, 4386 Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

This year’s convention will have the theme “Our Call Is Peace, Our Path Is Justice.”

Registration will begin Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. and will last until 6:30 p.m. There will be a recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m., which will be followed by the President’s Reception, ending at 10 p.m. Members of the parish council at St. James Church in McDonough will entertain participants with bingo, including door prizes.

Registration will continue on Saturday from 7:30-9 a.m.

Photographer and author Linda Schaefer will give the keynote address at the Saturday luncheon. Schaefer, a freelancer for the Associated Press, traveled to Calcutta after meeting Mother Teresa in Atlanta and had the opportunity to document the Missionaries of Charity. Her book, “Come and See,” documents her experience with the nun and her order and was published in 2003.

The Saturday evening banquet entertainment will be presented by a group from Corpus Christi Church, Stone Mountain, known as

FungAfrica, which means “Love of Africa.” They will share their culture and heritage through song and dance.

Workshops for the convention will cover both international and legislative topics, with a workshop entitled “The Face of Human Trafficking,” presented by Sister Joyce Ann Hertzig, OP, and Sandra Hollett, executive director of Catholic Social Services, Inc.; and church/family and community topics, with a workshop about “CASE Children and a Safe Environment Grant Project” given by Pat Smuck of the National Council of Catholic Women.

The AACCW is hoping to have at least three delegates from each parish or mission in the archdiocese.

The cost for the complete convention package is $100. In addition a special rate of $82 per night is being offered by the Holiday Inn Select. Those wishing to make reservations can call the hotel directly at (770) 457-6363 and ask for the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women rate.
