To the Editor:
Although I don’t normally speak my views in a public fashion, I have come to the frustration of many of my fellow church members (at Holy Spirit Church) that Catholic leaders allow politicians who profess to be Catholic to publicly promote sin. Of course I am referring to abortion and the stance by “pro-choice” politicians who claim personal rejection and public support at the same time. How can a Catholic bishop allow such behavior from a member of his flock? Either abortion is a sin or it is not. If it is, then bishops need to persistently speak out against all who support these abortions. If the support is private, then the bishops should handle the situation in private. If the support is public (as with a politician), then the bishop must speak out publicly. I think failure by the bishop on this issue in this fashion is itself a scandal.
