Students Turn Off TV And Turn On To Books

Published: April 22, 2004

DECATUR—Students at St. Peter Claver Regional Catholic School were encouraged to participate in National TV-Turnoff Week April 19-25 by placing a “caution” sign across their home televisions and computers. They were allowed to use the computer for homework assignments but not for playing video games or other game-type activities. All students received a form to record what they did instead of watching TV; on the back of the form they were to list the books they read during the week. A long list of alternative activities was provided to the students to stimulate their families’ thinking about ways to make the week a celebratory time.
