What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Letter to the Editor from Peachtree City, GA

Published: March 25, 2004

To the Editor:

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” God grants us faith as a free gift, and His Church teaches us what the objects of faith are: the triune God, heaven, salvation, etc. Faith is not merely a “very individual experience” which originates with man and is therefore strictly subjective and relativistic. Yet, the play “Leap” and the article about it (The Georgia Bulletin, March 18) quite clearly support this modernist and heretical view.

The article described the play as putting all religions on the same level and all experiences of faith as essentially equal in worth. While this notion accords well with modern, politically correct notions of “spirituality,” it is completely at odds with the Catholic teachings on the nature of truth, religion and faith. It is therefore totally inappropriate for a Catholic newspaper to condone this kind of religious relativism in its pages. There may exist varying forms of faith in the world, but there is only one true Faith, one true God, and one true Church. Let us not forget that.
