Atlanta Boy Choir To Perform Concert At Conyers Monastery Dec. 13

Published: December 4, 2003

CONYERS—In its 46-year history, the Atlanta Boy Choir has entertained audiences from Atlanta to St. Petersburg, Russia, and at hundreds of concert halls and great cathedrals in between. The acclaimed group will continue a 23-year local holiday tradition when they perform at the Abbey of Our Lady of Holy Spirit Monastery on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.

Tickets to the concert are $20 per person and are available at the Conyers Welcome Center or by calling (770) 602-2606. Half of the net proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the monastery’s program to feed the hungry. They have one of the largest and most extensive food programs in the Atlanta area and this event provides much needed assistance.

The Atlanta Boy Choir, founded in 1957 by Fletcher Wolfe, is now under the baton of David R. White and is considered one of the finest choral groups of its kind in the world. Over 5,000 boys representing various economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds have gained cultural and educational enrichment by preparing and presenting great music to audiences across North America and Europe.

The choir has appeared before presidents, popes, crowned heads of state, and U.S. soldiers. During the coming year they will tour Germany and Austria. In 1989 the Atlanta Boy Choir won a prestigious Grammy Award for its performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the late Robert Shaw.

This year’s performance is sponsored by the Covington/Conyers Choral Guild, metro Atlanta’s oldest continuously performing, non-auditioned community chorus. The guild, in its 20th season, is 90-plus singers strong and counts several Atlanta Boy Choir alumni among its members. Under the leadership of musical director and conductor Roger Waters, the choral guild performs locally several times each year and regularly appears at venues throughout the Southeast. For the past five years, they have performed as part of the candlelight holiday tours at the Biltmore House in Asheville, N.C.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is located at 2625 Georgia Highway 212 in Conyers. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of the concert.
