Guardian Angels Offer Help At Christ The King School

Published: November 27, 2003

ATLANTA—The Guardian Angel Program at Christ the King School was formed in 1993 by CKS parents who had the vision to offer Christ’s hospitality to the newest members of the community in conjunction with the school’s Parent Volunteer Association. The program welcomes all new kindergarten, pre-first and first-grade students and their families.

As the school doors open each school year, the “guardian angels” wrap their arms around the new students so that they can begin their journey with the school family in an extra warm and special way. During the first two weeks of school, the Guardian Angel Committee gathers at the guardian angel poles to greet the new little ones at the morning carpool to escort them to their classroom when the bell rings to begin classes.

To become a guardian angel, students complete an application listing their reasons for wanting to participate in the program. One student wrote, “Little kids need help in a big new school.” Another said, “Because I want new students to be welcomed, secure and happy.” A third wrote, “I want to show them how cool CKS is. I also want to be their friend.”

These rising fifth- and sixth-graders and their families take the new students and families under their wings to welcome them.

After the student body gathers for the liturgy on the feast of the guardian angels, the newest students surprise their guardian angel with a special guardian angel pen to thank them for their lasting gift of friendship.
