CCHD Helps People Break The Grip Of Poverty
Most Reverend John F. Donoghue, Archbishop of Atlanta
Published: November 20, 2003
Dear Friends in Christ,
Despite the best efforts of concerned Catholics like those of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and of all our nation’s institutes of true charitable outreach, thirty-three million people in our country remain caught in the grip of poverty – one in six children, one in ten families, one in ten of our senior citizens. Since 1970, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has worked in the name of the Church to help people break the grip of poverty – not just for a day, but for a lifetime.
But this worthy Campaign relies on annual collections in parishes like yours to fund anti-poverty and self-help programs in communities across the country. In recent years, we have been forced to turn down nearly half the groups that apply for help. Because of this, I ask that you give generously to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development when the annual collection is taken in your parish this coming November 23rd. We send 75 percent of the donations to the Campaign’s national office to support worthy projects across the country, while keeping 25 percent here in our own Archdiocese to fund local initiatives – affordable housing, neighborhood safety, and assistance to immigrant peoples.
We can being lasting relief to poverty in our nation if we work together, inspired by the love that Jesus Christ bids us have for one another. Please support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and help make it so.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend John F. Donoghue Archbishop of Atlanta |
