Published: November 6, 2003
MARIETTA—St. Joseph Catholic School in Marietta held its 50th anniversary celebration the week of Oct. 6 as alumni, students, staff, parents and community members gathered to celebrate the school’s history and its promising future.
The celebration was kicked off early in the week with an anniversary Mass celebrated by Father Paul Berny, pastor of St. Joseph Parish. He impressed upon the students the foundation imparted by the school on its alumni, a foundation the school continues to create. His enthusiasm for the current parish expansion and the school’s construction projects was evident throughout his talk.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, more than 150 students, faculty members, parents, parishioners and friends began the day’s festivities at the school’s first 5-K race and one-mile fun run sponsored by Rosebud Technologies.
Later that evening alumni from the classes of 1958 to 1990, as well as former and current teachers and parents, attended a dinner dance at St. Joseph’s new parish center. Msgr. Pat Bishop, pastor of Transfiguration Church in Marietta and a graduate of the class of 1960, was the guest speaker.
“St. Joseph Catholic School is a place of safety, comfort and joy. I owe my priesthood to the Marist priests who served here when I was a child,” said Msgr. Bishop.
He encouraged the St. Joseph community to look at the school’s new building through the eyes of a child. “Through the children’s eyes, you will see how important this school is to them. Through their eyes we will be able to relive that excitement for many years to come.”
The weeklong celebration culminated in a Sunday family picnic at Laurel Park in Marietta on Oct. 12. More than 300 people attended and continued to reminisce and share their gratitude for St. Joseph Catholic School’s past while looking forward to its future.
