Spotlight On A Saint: St. Sebastian

Published: August 21, 2003

Sebastian was the son of a wealthy Roman family who was educated in Milan. An officer of the imperial Roman army and captain of the guard, Sebastian was known as Roman Emperor Diocletian's favorite.

His Contribution To The Church

During Diocletian's persecution of the Christians, Sebastian visited them in prison, bringing supplies and comfort. During that time, he was reported to have healed the wife of a brother soldier by making the Sign of the Cross over her, and he went through the battlefields, converting soldiers and even a governor.

Because of his actions Sebastian was charged as a Christian and tied to a tree. Though he was shot with arrows and left for dead, he survived, recovered, and returned to preach to Diocletian. The emperor then had him beaten to death.

How He Can Help You

St. Sebastian is known as the patron saint of athletes, so ask him for help before that big game or meet. Ask him that you might be humble both in winning and losing and that all athletes might be protected.

Quotable St. Sebastian

"The devil strains every nerve to secure the souls which belong to Christ. We should not grudge our toil in wresting them from Satan and giving them back to God."
