Alex Smith Receives St. Thomas More Award
ATLANTA-Archbishop John F. Donoghue recently honored Alex Smith, senior partner with the Atlanta law firm Smith, Gambrell & Russell, with the St. Thomas More Award.
The award was given to Smith on behalf of the Georgia chapter of the St. Thomas More Society to recognize his distinguished service as a lawyer for more than 50 years, as well as his commitment to the Atlanta community.
Smith, who has been with the 110-year old law firm since 1949, received the lifetime achievement award, which is bestowed upon Catholic attorneys, for his dedication to the ideals embodied by Sir Thomas More. More was executed during the reign of King Henry VIII for refusing to acknowledge the authority of King Henry over that of the pope in what would become the Church of England. He was later canonized and is known as the patron saint of lawyers.
Smith's leadership in the Atlanta community was integral to his being the first to receive the award from the Georgia Society. He has served in leadership roles for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Marist School and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta. In addition, Smith was the founding president and a long-time leader of Central Atlanta Progress, a director of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and served on the board of the state Department of Transportation.
A graduate of the University of Georgia undergraduate and law school programs, and an avid Georgia football fan, he also chaired the University of Georgia Foundation from 1982-85. Smith is a member of the Atlanta Bar Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
