'Lunch 'N Learn' Series Covers Spectrum From Holy Land To Defensive Driving

ROSWELL - Senior Enriched Living will offer continuing education classes for seniors beginning in January.

SEL is a nonprofit sponsored by 29 churches of various denominations and synagogues in the Atlanta area and dedicated to empowering adults age 50 and older to lead productive, creative and independent lives through education and learning. Affiliated Catholic churches include St. Ann's, Marietta, St. Peter Chanel, Roswell, St. Michael the Archangel, Woodstock, St. Brigid, Alpharetta, St. Thomas Aquinas, Alpharetta, and St. Andrew's, Roswell. About 1,600 people participate in the courses throughout the year, with sessions also offered in the spring, summer and fall.

One of the continuing education course presenters will be Rev. Mr. Lloyd Sutter, senior administrator of religious education for the archdiocese, who will speak on "Quo Vadis: The Holy Land Today."

Senior Enriched Living's "Lunch 'n Learn" series will be held on Thursdays from Jan. 16-March 6 at Roswell Presbyterian Church, 755 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell. The registration fee for all classes is $30. Lunch 'n Learn classes to be offered from 10-11 a.m. include the history and geography of Russia; current events; human anatomy and physiology; a discussion class on topics of interest to common humanity; and a course addressing how history could have happened differently. From 10 a.m.-noon classes will include watercolor painting; quilting; fundamentals and beginning bridge; and beginning and intermediate woodcarving. A class on defensive driving will be offered on Wednesdays, Jan. 22 and 29 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Dodson Youth Building of Roswell United Methodist Church, behind the SEL office at 814 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell. A materials fee of $10 payable to the AARP is due on the first day, instead of the SEL registration fee.

Lunch 'n Learn classes from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. include one addressing a variety of topics relevant to seniors; appreciating opera; achieving financial goals; personality types; and Teddy Roosevelt. From 1-3 p.m. advanced Spanish will be offered which costs an extra $20 in addition to the registration fee, and from 1:15-2:15 p.m. Georgia Perimeter College professors will address a potpourri of topics; and local music artists will present a concert series with a variety of styles in solo and ensemble presentations. From 1:15-3:15 intermediate bridge, calligraphy, intermediate oil painting and woodcarving II will be offered.

Its Senior Adult Continuing Education program will be held on Tuesdays from Jan. 14-March 4 in the Dodson Youth Building of Roswell United Methodist Church. In the Senior Adult Continuing Education program, Rev. Mr. Sutter in his Holy Land course from 10-11 a.m. will trace the origin of the conflict in Jerusalem from ancient times to today. Rabbi Donald Tam of Temple Beth Tikvah will introduce the course with "Framing the Question." Also in that time slot Dr. Eugene Randolph, a retired Presbyterian minister, will address the end times using Revelation and apocalyptic writings of Ezekiel and Zechariah, Daniel and the Essenes of Qumran two centuries before Christ.

From 10 a.m.-noon conversational Spanish II will be offered; from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. classes will be offered on the life of Churchill; on big business deals that went wrong; on investing; and baseball nostalgia.

Beginning Spanish will be offered from 1-3 p.m., with the additional $20 fee.

Personal computer courses will be offered at the SEL office. An introduction to the basics of personal computers will be offered at two times on Tuesdays from Jan. 14 - March 4, from 10 a.m.-noon and from 1:30-3:30 p.m. A class on the Internet will be offered on Wednesdays from Jan. 15-March 5 from 10 a.m.-noon, and repeated from 1:30-3:30 p.m. A class covering the practical and useful features of Microsoft Word 2000 will be held on Thursdays from Jan. 16-March 6 from 10 a.m.-noon.

Computers classes cost $50 or $25 for those who have already taken a course.
