Cathedral Choir To Present Advent Candlelight Concert

ATLANTA - The Cathedral of Christ the King will present the Cathedral Choir in its 13th annual presentation of a candlight concert of Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 9 p.m.

This beautiful service, presented in the superb visual and acoustic environment of the Cathedral, explores the mystery and hope surrounding the coming of the Savior through readings and song.

Advent Lessons and Carols, sung in churches all over the world since the late 1800s, is illuminated only by candlelight and uses the music of composers Orlando Gibbons, Herbert Howells, John Tavener and John Dunstable as well as ancient chants of the season. This year's service will also feature the music of an extrordinary new composer, Patricia Van Ness of Boston. Van Ness is author of not only the music but also the texts of her compositions. She first translates her poetry into Latin, and then sets these Latin verses to strikingly medieval sounding music. The resulting experience defies temporal classification.

The Cathedral Choir will be under the direction of Kevin Culver, choirmaster, and will be accompanied on Howells' dramatic Magnificat by Timothy Wissler, Cathedral organist.

All members of the diocesan family are invited to attend. For more information, contact Culver at the Cathedral of Christ the King at (404) 233-2145 ext. 470.
