Msgr. Paul Reynolds Transferred To Houston For Medical Treatment

ATLANTA - Msgr. Paul H. Reynolds, vicar general in curia of the archdiocese, was transferred to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on Monday. Msgr. Reynolds, 63, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and had been undergoing chemotherapy at Saint Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta, where he has been hospitalized since March 8. He is currently in temporary remission from the disease, and went to M.D. Anderson to explore further treatment options. The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is ranked as one of the top two cancer treatment centers in the nation.

He will be under the care of Dr. Elihu Estey, chief of the hospital's section of AML and Myelodysplasia Syndrome (MDS) in the department of leukemia. Dr. Estey's clinical expertise is treating older patients with AML, and the design and analysis of clinical trials. Dr. Estey has been a professor and internist at M.D. Anderson department of hematology since 1993, and has been with M.D. Anderson since 1978.

In his job at the archdiocese, Msgr. Reynolds is moderator of the curia, and oversees the central offices of the archdiocese, handling much of the day-to-day business at the Catholic Center. He also became chancellor Nov. 1, 2001, when the judicial vicar, Msgr. Louis Naughton, became critically ill and Msgr. David Talley, then chancellor, was named to his post at the Tribunal. During Msgr. Reynolds' absence, Msgr. R. Donald Kiernan, vicar general for pastoral ministries, and Archbishop John. F. Donoghue are handling Msgr. Reynolds' responsibilities.

A special healing mass for Msgr. Reynolds was celebrated April 10 at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Anyone who wishes to send well wishes and cards to him can do so in care of the Catholic Center, 680 West Peachtree St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30308.
