ATLANTA-In one of the larger classes in the last several years, 13 men with professions as diverse as truck driving, epidemiology and poultry processing became the newest permanent deacons of the archdiocese following their ordination Feb. 2 at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The permanent diaconate class of 2002 is almost double last year's and is an indication of bigger classes in the future. "There are now 80 men in the diaconate formation program," said Deacon Loris Sinanian, director of deacon formation. Ordained were Rev. Mr. James R. Bishop, Rev. Mr. Rafael Carballo-Arroyo, Rev. Mr. Charles Carignan; Rev. Mr. Maurice Chapple; Rev. Mr. Roger Fraser; Rev. Mr. William Heinsch; Rev. Mr. Terry Holmer; Rev. Mr. Richard Marinchak; Rev. Mr. John McManus; Rev. Mr. Scott McNabb, Rev. Mr. Gary Roche; Rev. Mr. Joseph Ruberté and Rev. Mr. Kenneth Williams. For all of these men, the responsibilities in the role of permanent deacon are not take lightly. "There is a greater propensity of men who want to serve the church," Deacon Sinanian said. "They could be involved in lay ministry, but this offers them the chance to be 100 percent, completely committed to what they are doing." At the event, Deacon McNabb, 52, was already feeling a greater sense of accountability for his actions and responsibility to represent Christ. "I feel the seriousness of the mark on my soul through ordination but it's done in joy. I'll rely on the Holy Spirit to give me strength and guidance." Deacon Carballo-Arroyo, 39, said he didn't want to be a deacon at first, but gradually was called to it. "God has been yelling for many years, but everything happens at his appropriate time, not ours. It takes time, prayer and preparation." The fruits of that preparation - and the work ahead - were stressed to the candidates during the homily given by Archbishop John F. Donoghue. The archbishop celebrated the Mass. He was joined by about 40 priests of the archdiocese, Deacon Sinanian and Deacon Alfred Mitchell, director of deacon personnel, and about 50 permanent deacons there to support the candidates. During his homily, the archbishop talked about the history of the diaconate and its association with three areas of grace: liturgy, Scripture and love. He called upon the men to celebrate liturgical works with sincerity and to follow Church magisterium teaching guidelines, as "unity of purpose and execution in sacramental rites increases visible church unity." And as they teach Scripture they also must live by it, he said, and also "cling to the wisdom of the Church" through her saints and doctors. He called the new permanent deacons to "to let love instigate, guide, rule, and finish" all their works, in public and private. "Bring this medicine, compassion, to all the needs which confront you, and you will become, in a limited but nonetheless effective way, a true assistant of the soul's only Physician, Jesus Christ, and a dispenser of . . . the grace, the love of God, which falls on us in abundant showers." Deacon Chapple, a widower, and Deacon Carballo-Arroyo, who is single, then took a vow of celibacy, part of the rite for singles. All 13 men promised respect and obedience to the archbishop and his successors and then prostrated themselves in the center aisle, after which the archbishop laid hands on each of them to ordain them. At a reception following the service, Deacon McNabb explained that an attraction to the Eucharist led him to convert to Catholicism 22 years ago, and he knew then he wanted to become active at church, and eventually began discerning his diaconate call. With a love for interfaith issues and apologetics, he among his duties will teach an apologetics class in the diaconate program and continue work in marriage preparation at the Cathedral, his assigned parish, where half of the weddings are interfaith. An epidemiologist, he was grateful to have his colleagues at his workplace, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, join other friends and family for the event, and noted he and a Baptist recently initiated a lunchtime Bible study there. "Having a well-rounded life makes you more productive as a scientist. It's a good witness to the CDC that God is here. It brings people back to their first calling to praise, reverence and service," he said. "I don't hide it (his faith) or only wear it on Sunday." Deacon Chapple is one deacon who was truly grateful to reach ordination day. He was hospitalized in December for a serious infection, and doctors told him he had little chance of surviving. Deacon Chapple said he feels that health problems throughout formation have caused him to refocus on God's will. "It's been a very humbling experience these four years. I get up every morning and I thank the good Lord he's given me another day to do something for him."
