Sister Terese Matthews, GNSH, Dies

ATLANTA-Sister Terese Matthews, a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart known for her art ministry and crafts depicting angels and Madonnas, died Jan. 21 at Frankford Hospital, in Langhorne, Pa. She was 86, just six days short of her 87th birthday. It was the 69th year of her religious life. The petite sister shared her gift of art with students of all ages from Ogdensburg, N.Y., to Atlanta before retiring to the motherhouse in Philadelphia in June 2000. Born in Ballydavock, County Mayo, Ireland, to John Matthews and Jane Skeffington on Jan. 27, 1915, she was raised in Lowell, Mass., and attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School. After her junior year at Immaculate Conception High School, Sister Matthews entered the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart on Aug. 24, 1933, and made her Final Profession Aug. 24, 1938, completing her schooling at Holy Angels Academy and D'Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y. From there, she earned her bachelor of arts degree in English in 1947, and received a master of fine arts degree in 1954 from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Sister Matthews lived in Atlanta with the Grey Nuns from 1992-2000, where she continued her ministry of art. Through her cards and paintings of Madonnas and angels at craft sales in the parishes of St. Jude the Apostle, Atlanta, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Atlanta, St. John Neumann, Lilburn, and Holy Cross, Atlanta, Sister Matthews influenced the lives of those who delighted in her work. In addition to her religious family, Sister Matthews is survived by her sisters, Mary Flanagan of Lowell, Mass., Kathleen Matthews of Hathorne, Mass., and Jane Cryan of Chelmsford, Mass.; three nieces and four nephews. A memorial mass will be held Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at St. Peter Chanel Church, Roswell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, 1750 Quarry Rd., Yardley, PA 19067-3998.
