St. Joseph Middle School Building Opens

ATHENS—The opening and blessing of the middle school addition at St. Joseph’s School was celebrated Aug. 31. Archbishop John F. Donoghue celebrated Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, which was followed by a blessing ceremony and reception in the new building.

Each of the 361 students as well as over 200 parents, staff, parishioners and supporters attended the ceremony. Special acknowledgement was given to Sister Teresa Ballisty, IHM, previous principal, Debi Balog, development director, and Ashley Simpson, parent and coordinator of the construction effort.

Middle school classrooms, a science lab, offices and a music room are located in the new building on the St. Joseph campus. With 6,000 square feet of additional space, the new classrooms have created more space in classrooms in the main building and have allowed for more science, art and music and computer teaching space.

The added facilities have truly changed the educational experience for the students. Student Kristin White is “happy that we have our own science lab and music room” and student Darren Gray appreciates “all that the parents and teachers have done to help us achieve this goal.”

“I think it’s really cool that the middle school has its own building now,” said student Kate Golembiewski.

“Through the support of our PTO, the development committee and St. Joseph’s Parish, this wonderful educational enhancement is a reality,” said Sister Mary Glackin, IHM, principal.
