KENNESAW—Certified teachers in a variety of subjects are available to parents who home school their children through Victory Academy, a hybrid school that assists in specific subjects from fifth grade through high school.

The tutorial service, which is being offered in a portion of Herbert Hall at St. Catherine of Siena Church, will be provided in an environment that teaches and supports Catholic doctrine, according to the director, Annette Hew.

Subjects, which will be taught by certified instructors one or two days per week, include math for students in fifth through 10th grade; English for students in fifth through 10th grade; grammar for ninth-grade students; history for students in fifth through eighth grade and 10th grade; biology for students in 10th grade; Spanish for students in fifth through 10th grade; Latin for students in seventh through 10th grade; and sewing for students in fifth through 10th grade. Students will attend classes for Spanish and math twice a week. The other classes will be once a week.

Instructors will assign the remainder of the work for students to complete at home, which allows parents to continue to lead in training their children in character development and providing guidance in the completion of academic work.

Teachers include Teresita Blaza, who will teach English and history. Blaza holds a master’s degree in education and has taught for 31 years in Catholic schools and also at Sylvan Learning Center. Math teacher Ann Marie Fallon has a master’s degree in education and has taught elementary math in Catholic schools for many years. George Petryk, who will teach biology, is a doctor of chiropractic and kinesiology.

Spanish teacher Virginia Loggiodice holds a master’s degree in counseling. She has opened a school in Marietta which teaches Spanish to students and businesses.

Kate Yost, who will teach Latin, has a doctorate specializing in ancient and medieval history from Emory University. She has an extensive background in Latin. She has taught Western civilization at Emory and has taught Latin to the Catholic Home Educators of Georgia.

Sewing teacher Michelle Walliser has experience in teaching sewing and is starting her own sewing business.

Families can select one or more classes per year. The Seton Home Study program will be the curriculum primarily used for instruction. This will enable students to receive an accredited diploma. Students who maintain a B average will be eligible to apply for the Georgia Hope Scholarship fund, Hew said.

Hew said that currently there is a maximum of nine students in a class.

“It helps families by helping the students stay on track academically and it also gives them time to spend with their parents,” she said.

The registration fee is $15 per student with a maximum of $50 per family. The cost for classes twice per week is $55 per month and for classes once per week the cost is $33 per month. Contact Hew at (770) 975-7351 or by e-mail at victoryacademyga@yahoo.com.
