EMMITSBURG, Md.—Rev. Mr. Joseph Peek and Rev. Mr. John P. Shramko, seminarians of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, were ordained to the transitional diaconate May 12.

Bishop Daniel A. Hart of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn., was the ordaining bishop during Mass at the National Shrine of St Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md.

Rev. Mr. Peek is the son of Joseph and Mary Peek, members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Atlanta. He is also the brother of Father Kevin Peek, parochial vicar at Holy Trinity Church, Peachtree City.

Rev. Mr. Shramko is the son of Bernard and Sue Shramko, members of Holy Spirit Church, Atlanta.

Both are studying at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg. The ordination to the transitional diaconate represents a renewed consecration to Christ and is a final step in the progression toward the priesthood. Deacons serve as ministers of the word, of the altar and of charity.
