DALLASThe June 22, 2000 issue of The Georgia Bulletin on
evangelization of Catholics no longer active in the
church received a second-place award from the Catholic
Press Association at its annual convention May 23-25.
Judges said of the issue, compelling testimonies and a
comprehensive piece with riveting case studies. This was a good piece.
The issue entitled Welcome Home to the Catholic Church was honored
in the category of best special supplement or special issue with advertising
emphasis.
First place was given to Catholic New York for its issue on the
late Cardinal John OConnors 80th birthday. Third place was given to
the Bayou Catholic of Houma, La., for an outdoor guide.
Georgia Bulletin photographer Michael Alexander received a
second-place award for his color photograph of the Atlanta
skyline, which was published in the June 22, 2000 evangelization issue,
accompanied by a Scripture citation. The award was given in the category of
best scenic, still life or weather photo.
First place went to The Catholic Herald of Madison, Wis., for a
reflective photograph of a Marian statue and third place went to The Catholic
Key of Kansas City, Mo., for their Easter 2000 cover.
The staff of The Georgia Bulletin also received an honorable
mention for the March 16, 2000 issue devoted to the sacrament of penance. The award was given for best
analysis, background or round-up reporting on a subject.
First place was given to the Long Island Catholic of Rockville
Centre, N.Y., for a series on the sacrament of penance. Second place was given
to The Catholic Register of Toronto, Ontario, for a series on rebuilding
communities in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras
following devastating hurricanes and the impact Canadian aid had made. Third
place was given to The Catholic New World of Chicago for a series of profiles,
Black and Catholic in Chicago, examining the history and prominent
roles of black Catholics in Chicago.
