ATLANTACardinal James Hickey, archbishop emeritus of
Washington, D.C., was in Atlanta March 29 to receive the Richard and Hinda
Rosenthal Foundation Award on behalf of the Archdiocesan Health Care Network.
The award, recognition from the American College of Physicians and
the American Society of Internal Medicine, was presented to Cardinal Hickey and
Dr. William Battle at the Georgia World Congress Center. The two professional
organizations held their convocation in Atlanta.
The Archdiocesan Health Care Network was honored as a model
program that coordinates the pro-bono services of health care specialists and
works with local hospital and radiology clinics in the Washington, D.C., area
so that caring and competent care is provided to the poor and the
uninsured.
The AHCN acts as a coordinating agency that refers people in
need to over 300 specialized physicians and dentists, radiology clinics,
hospitals and rehabilitation units which have agreed to volunteer their
services to this vulnerable population.
In 1998, professional volunteers and hospitals in the network
provided 2,800 appointments, which translated into nearly $1.8 million in
pro-bono services.
Cardinal Hickey and Dr. William E. Battle accepted the award on
behalf of the AHCN. |
