Champagne Luncheon Marks Auxiliary's 60th Birthday

ATLANTA—A special year for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta was marked Oct. 18 with the 44th annual Champagne Luncheon. It is the 100th anniversary of the Hawthorne Dominican order, whose sisters staff the home, and the 60th anniversary of the Auxiliary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home.

The auxiliary, a non-sectarian group, was formed in 1940 to assist the sisters in their work. Auxiliary members have served in the office, in the patients’ rooms, made thousands of cancer pads for patients, sought charitable donations and held fund-raisers. The Champagne Luncheon is one of the events sponsored by the auxiliary each year. Over 1,000 people attend the luncheon each year.

The luncheon was held at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel this year and was dedicated in memory of Sister M. Raphael, OP, who died in 1999. All 40 past presidents of the auxiliary were recognized, including 11 who attended this year’s luncheon. The auxiliary has 700 members and membership is $15 a year.

Brenda Wood, anchor on 11Alive News, was mistress of ceremonies and spoke of her own mother, a two-time cancer survivor, who lives with her and participates in a prayer ministry to people with cancer. She thanked those who give their time to help Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, saying, “You are the people who make the world go round.”

Robin M. Hensley, vice president and principal of marketing and business development of Patton Construction Co., was the honorary chair. Sheila Jones was the luncheon committee chairman. Musical entertainment was provided by the Atlanta Blue Notes.

Father Greg Kenny, CMF, pastor of Corpus Christi Church, Stone Mountain, was awarded a $1,000 gift donated by Ahlberg Engineering. Alice Munchak of Rome received a weekend at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel and Sally Quarles received a shopping spree at Grisham & Limeres Jewelers.
