Father McDonald Dies; Served Hispanics, Refugees

Necrology

ATLANTA-Father Raphael McDonald, OFM, who served in the 1960s and 1970s in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, died July 11 at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 86.

Father McDonald, a friar for 60 years and a priest for 56 years, served as the assistant director for the Archdiocesan Spanish Apostolate in 1963. From 1963-74, he served as the director for the Department of Resettlement and Migration and Refugee Services, United States Catholic Conference, for the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

Born in Oil City, Pa., Father McDonald was received into the Franciscan order on Aug. 12, 1938 in Paterson, N.J., and professed his first vows on Aug. 14, 1939. He made his final vows on Sept. 17, 1942 in Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood on June 11, 1944 in the Mount St. Sepulchre Friary in Washington.

His first assignment was as an assistant pastor in a parish in Mexico. He then served in several parishes in Texas, Colorado and Puerto Rico and as the superior for the Bolivia Missions.

After his service in Atlanta, Father McDonald served at parishes in Peru, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida. He also served as a professor in Bolivia and as a historian in Hong Kong.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Father McDonald was held July 13 at Holy Name Friary. He was buried at God’s Acre in Ringwood. He is survived by 18 nieces and nephews.
