Marist School Holds Commencement Exercises

ATLANTA—Marist School held its 99th commencement exercises for 183 members of the class of 2000 on Saturday, May 27 in Symphony Hall of the Woodruff Arts Center. Father Joel Konzen, SM, principal, awarded diplomas.

Matthew Meehan, the son of Eugene and Dona Meehan of Atlanta, delivered the valedictory address. Mary Keeley, the daughter of Dr. Donald Keeley and Ann Curran Keeley of Atlanta, delivered the salutatory address.

A member of All Saints Church, Dunwoody, the valedictorian plans to attend Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Meehan was the Marist Star Student for 1999-2000 for earning the highest combined score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. He was also a member of the dean’s list, the varsity tennis team, the Spanish Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

The salutatorian, a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, was also the recipient of the Sedes Sapientiae Award, Marist’s highest honor given by vote of the faculty to the senior excelling in scholarship, loyalty and service and who epitomizes the values for which Marist School stands.

Keeley was a member of the dean’s list, the varsity soccer team, a peer leader, a peer support faciliatator, vice president of Habitat for Humanity, a Damascus and Emmaus retreat leader and eucharistic minister. She was also a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the National Honor Society and was named “most likely to succeed” by her peers. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Brandon Russell, the son of Kevin and Karen Russell of Decatur, and Lauren Steed, the daughter of Dick and Malinda Steed of Atlanta and a member of St. Andrew’s Church, Roswell, received the Dean Hargis Award. This award recognizes seniors who have made outstanding contributions to Marist School through leadership, dedication and tenacity as participants for more than one season in a varsity athletic program. The award recognizes the ideals of Dean Hargis, athletic director and head football coach from 1968 to 1985.

The Archbishop’s Award, presented to the young man and woman who have achieved excellence in the study of the Catholic faith and have given service to their school, parish or community, was awarded to Mark Winchester, the son of Dennis and Gayle Winchester of Atlanta, who are members of the Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, and Molly Gleason, the daughter of Tom and Nicolette Gleason of Atlanta.

Lauren Steed was also the recipient of the Atlanta Journal Cup, sponsored by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which recognizes the best all-around senior, who excels in service, friendliness, embodiment of the school philosophy and involvement in a variety of activities.

The Baccalaureate Mass was celebrated on Friday, May 26 at Perimeter Church. Father Ronald Nikodem, SM, presided and members of the Marist community concelebrated the
