ATLANTA—Father James L. Hartnett, SM, will retire as president of Marist School next June, after serving in the role since 1989.

Father Richmond J. Egan, SM, who is serving as director of mission implementation at Marist School, will succeed Father Hartnett as president on July 1, 2001. The appointments were announced June 9 by Father William F. Rowland, SM, provincial of the Marists of the San Francisco-Washington, D.C. province.

Father Hartnett has been associated with Marist School for over three decades, serving as teacher from 1955-57, 1962-65 and 1988-89. He has also been business manager of the school and principal from 1971-82.

“Father Hartnett’s influence and vision for Marist have been extensive and profound,” said Father Rowland. “He is a familiar and friendly presence to students, parents and alumni who regard him as embodying the best of what Marist School stands for and what Marists hope to model.”

He oversaw significant expansion of campus buildings, most recently the construction of an aquatic center and assembly center to be completed in the spring of 2001. While he was principal the school dropped its military component, became a co-educational school and established an alumni association.

Father Egan comes to this position with a variety of experiences in education, journalism and administration. He holds graduate degrees in Scripture, liturgy, journalism and law and has taught journalism and media law at Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

He was news director and executive producer of Newsfront for five years, a weekly field-produced newscast on religion syndicated to PBS-member stations in 1985. He has taught in Catholic high schools in New Jersey and Ohio for seven years.

He has served the order as vicar provincial, director of initial formation and as a member of the provincial council. He has been a member of the Marist School Board of Trustees since 1994 and is currently overseeing the development of a new educational outreach program for children from low-income families that will start in June 2001.

NEW LEADERSHIP -- Father Richmond Egan, SM, left, has been named to succeed Father James Hartnett, SM, right, as president of Marist School, Atlanta, on July 1, 2001. Father Egan is currently the director of mission implementation at Marist School.
