ATLANTAFather Richard Kieran will be given the Ida M.
Patterson Award for Exceptional Personal Ministry at the 30th Annual Community
Breakfast of the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta.
The breakfast will be held Saturday, May 13, at the Hyatt Regency
Atlanta, 265 Peachtree St., from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Ambassador Andrew Young will
be a speaker at the breakfast, which has the theme Cultivating a Culture
of Reconciliation. Tickets, which are $20 per person, are available
through the Christian Council at (404) 622-2235, ext. 243, through April 30.
Father Kieran, a priest of the archdiocese for 35 years, has
served as president of the Christian Council, an interfaith and ecumenical
organization in the metropolitan Atlanta area. A former pastor of Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church, Atlanta, Holy Family Church, Marietta, St. Michaels
Church, Gainesville, St. Josephs Church, Athens, and St. Annas
Church, Monroe, Father Kieran served as a spiritual director of the Cursillo
movement from its inception in the archdiocese. He also helped to begin
Catholic ministry to Hispanics in North Georgia, learning Spanish and preaching
and celebrating the sacraments bilingually. He also served as the coordinator
of RENEW 2000 for the archdiocese developing small faith communities in
parishes for the Jubilee Year.
Father Kieran suffered a brain hemorrhage Oct. 30, 1999, and,
following surgery and lengthy hospitalization, has been in rehabilitative care.
In addition to Father Kieran, the Council will honor Dr. Joy Berry
with the Harry V. Richardson Award for Outstanding Work in Human Relations;
Rev. Dr. Clinton Marsh with the Christian Council Lifetime Achievement Award;
Lauren Gunderson and Susan Stroupe of the Life Is Sacred Campaign
with the Ambassador Andrew Young Award for Faith and Public Policy; Hillside
Presbyterian Church and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with the Archbishop
Thomas A. Donnellan Award for Christian Unity; and Mrs. Anna Davenport with the
Charles M. Watt Award for Outstanding Community Service. |
