ATLANTA-Ann Guscio, an English teacher at St. Pius X High School, was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year by the associates from the Wal-Mart store in Tucker for her excellence in education.

Guscio received a special Teacher of the Year rendition of the blue Wal-Mart vest and a $500 education grant for St. Pius.

One of 2,500 teachers from around the country selected for the 1999 honor, Guscio has been teaching at St. Pius since 1960. The award winners received a total of more than $1.25 million in grants for their schools or school districts.

David Glass, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., praised teachers for their commitment to excellence.

"Teachers have one of the most challenging and critical jobs in our country," he said. "The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award program is our associates' way of letting teachers know how much we appreciate their contributions to the education of our youth, which in turn contribute to the vitality of our communities."

The Wal-Mart/SAM's Club Teacher of the Year program honors teachers in Wal-Mart and Sam's Club communities who distinguish themselves as mentors, motivators and innovators in education.

Since the program began in 1996, over 7,600 teachers have been honored, contributing $3.8 million in educational grants to local schools.
