ATLANTA--The St. Vincent de Paul Society and Buckhead Christian Ministry have joined together to open a thrift store located in Piedmont Plaza in Buckhead.

The store will provide a source of revenue for the charitable programs of both organizations, selling a variety of donated merchandise at affordable prices while giving away items of necessity to people in need.

The thrift store is the first joint venture of the nonprofit organizations, but they have worked together in the past to assist clients and share a goal of helping people through times of temporary personal and financial crisis.

“The joint venture is a win-win situation for both organizations,” said Nancy Coveny, executive director of Buckhead Christian Ministry. “St. Vincent de Paul Society has a long history of operating thrift stores both in Atlanta and throughout the country and Buckhead Christian Ministry has a resource for volunteers in the Buckhead area.”

Volunteers from both organizations staff the 3,300 square foot store and oversee all aspects of the store’s management. They are responsible for accepting, sorting and stocking donations of clothing for men, women and children, wardrobe accessories, collectibles, china and glassware. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nancy Brockert, SVDP Council thrift store manager, who has been consulting with people at the new store, said they hope to offer extended hours in the near future.

“With additional volunteers we will be able to expand the hours of the store, which will mean more help for those in need,” she said.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international nonprofit organization of Catholic lay people that has provided temporary emergency assistance to people in need for 96 years.

Buckhead Christian Ministry is a nonprofit outreach program, sponsored by local Atlanta area churches, that assists the working poor who are struggling to keep their rent and utilities paid.

There is a great need for volunteers to work Saturdays during the holiday season. For information about volunteering or making a donation call (770) 986-4209.
