St. Pius Senior Wins English Award

ATLANTA--Continuing a school tradition, St. Pius X High School senior Karen Stanley has won the annual Achievement Award of the National Council of Teachers of English.

A member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Hapeville, Stanley was one of only 876 students nationally to win the award, which recognizes students who excel in many areas of English studies.

Each year the English department at St. Pius nominates two juniors who must submit samples of their writing, including a timed essay. Stanley was nominated by English teacher Charleen Klister.

Over 40 St. Pius students have won this award since 1968 when the school began competing. The NCTE award carries with it recommendations for college admission and scholarship money.
