DULUTH-The Church of St. Benedict is seeking additional medical volunteers
to travel to Haiti on a medical mission trip in February 2000.
The medical mission will be composed of doctors and nurses as well as other
non-medical people. With the support of St. Benedict pastor, Father Hugh
Marren, they will travel to the church's sister parish, Sacred Heart Church,
located in Hinche, Haiti, for five days, treating as many people as possible. A
pediatrician and several nurses are still needed, as well as medicines, both
prescription and non-prescription, and other medical supplies. They are also
seeking American Airlines frequent flier miles and cash donations.
The relationship between St. Benedict's and Sacred Heart began in January of
this year with an outreach program to the Haitian parish. Through the efforts
of St. Benedict parishioners, Sacred Heart has completed construction of the
church rectory and obtained a generator and housing necessary to provide
electrical power. Construction has also continued on the interior of the church
and on a perimeter wall surrounding the church compound. In addition, Sacred
Heart's pastor, Father Bourdeau, has been able to obtain a vehicle with which
he can visit his four outlying parish missions. Funding has also gone to
obtaining more teachers and increasing their salaries.
Father Bourdeau recently visited St. Benedict's and expressed his gratitude
to the congregation for all the help that has been given to the people of his
parish. He said he was encouraged by the Duluth parishioners hospitality
and that he could do nothing in return except to thank and pray for the
congregation.
Donations may be sent to the Church of St. Benedict, 11045 Parsons Road,
Duluth, GA 30097, ATTN: Haiti MM2000.
