Father Kieran In Serious Condition

GAINESVILLE--Father Richard Kieran’s condition was listed as serious at North Georgia Medical Center Nov. 9 and he remains in a coma. The pastor of St. Michael’s Church, Gainesville, and co-spiritual director of the Cursillo movement suffered a brain hemorrhage Oct. 30 and underwent surgery the same day. His brother, Father John Kieran, said doctors put in a tracheotomy Nov. 8 as a precaution for breathing while continuing to wean him from artificial ventilation. The tracheotomy is preferable to a ventilator, Father Kieran said, because it does not damage the vocal chords and when a patient emerges from a coma, it is possible to speak. It is also easily reversible, he said. Father Richard remains in intensive care and visitors are restricted. Archbishop John F. Donoghue has asked for the prayers of the archdiocese on his behalf. A daily update on his condition is offered through the Cursillo movement phone number, which is (770) 455-4131. Since his illness, St. Michael’s Church has been staffed by Father Jorge Christancho and Father Joseph Liem Nguyen, parochial vicars.
