Two Parishes Build Habitat Homes, Friendships

ATLANTA--St. Anthony of Padua Church and Holy Spirit Church, both in Atlanta, completed their most recent Habitat for Humanity home June 26.

The remodeled HUD home is the fourth home, including three new structures, completed by the two churches for Habitat for Humanity.

The two churches began working together in 1996 as part of a Day Foundation grant that encouraged churches of different racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds to partner in sponsorship of new homes.

For each project, the two churches have shared the responsibility of recruiting volunteers, providing lunch for eight to 10 weeks and planning the house dedication at the end of the project.

As the churches work together to provide a service to low-income families who themselves help build the home, parishioners enjoy the fellowship of new friendships. They also have the opportunity to work with the families who come each weekend to work.

Parishioners of the church said that the “excitement, dedication and commitment of the families have been a most heartwarming experience and a great motivator for volunteers to return many Saturdays to complete the project.”

The partnership encourages a continuing relationship between the churches, providing an opportunity for volunteers to stay in touch with each other, attend functions at the partner parish and strengthen friendships.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building low-cost housing in partnership with responsible, low-income families. By having the support of sponsoring partners and volunteers, Habitat builds new hope, new relationships and a new sense of community, as well as new houses.
