Msgr. Young Named To Education Post

ATLANTA--Msgr. Terry Young has been appointed Secretary for Education by Archbishop John F. Donoghue for the archdiocese, effective Jan. 7, 1999.

Msgr. Young, pastor of St. Benedict Church, Duluth, has been a priest of the archdiocese for 26 years. Following ordination in June 1972, Msgr. Young began his priestly ministry as a parochial vicar and director of religious education at Holy Spirit Church, Atlanta. He became assistant principal at St. Joseph High School, Atlanta, and taught religion there from 1973-76; he became principal of the school in 1975 and served in that capacity for 18 months before the school’s closing.

He earned his master of education degree in school administration from Georgia State University in 1975. In 1976 Msgr. Young was named principal of St. Pius X High School, Atlanta, and during his 15-year tenure reorganized the program which had been developed around the open classroom.

He served as president of the Georgia Independent School Association and on the archdiocesan Board of Education. On Feb. 1, 1993 he was appointed Secretary for Education for the archdiocese, a post he held until his resignation Feb. 1, 1996. He was elevated to the rank of monsignor Dec. 20, 1994.
