Hurricane Mitch Relief Efforts Underway

ATLANTA--The Archdiocese of Atlanta has sent $50,000 to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to aid victims of Hurricane Mitch in Central America.

To date CRS has contributed $400,000 in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador for food, shelter materials and medicine, according to Betti Knott, Secretary for Catholic Charities and local CRS liaison.

In addition, members of the Honduran community in Atlanta, assisted by the Mexican consulate, are collecting medicine, non-perishable food, tools, electrical equipment and bottled water for Honduras. These goods may be brought to warehouse space at 2053 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Tucker, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Clothing is not being collected at this time.

Because of the magnitude of the hurricane damage, relief efforts in Central America will be ongoing for a year or longer. Future needs will be publicized after immediate needs are addressed.
