Atlanta Seminarian Dies In Car Crash

ATLANTA--Stephen P. McDonough, 29, a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, died June 23 a few hours after a one-car accident near Albany, N.Y. He was alone in the car and had gone out to buy gasoline for a lawn mower.

Msgr. Donald Kenny, director of vocations for the archdiocese, said McDonough had just joined the Atlanta program at Easter time and was scheduled to begin second theology at Mt. St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. He had been studying for the Diocese of Burlington, Vt.

He wanted to come South because he was interested in Hispanic culture and teaching Spanish, Msgr. Kenny said.

"He was a very outgoing person and was especially devoted to Hispanics and other people who struggle."

Msgr. Kenny and five seminarians attended the funeral Mass June 25 at Corpus Christi Church in Clifton Park, near Albany. Burial was private.

Also attending was Father Samuel Porras-Gomez, parochial vicar at St. Joseph's Church in Dalton. Ordained June 7 by Archbishop John F. Donoghue after graduating from Mt. St. Mary's this spring, Father Porras-Gomez was responsible for McDonough's joining the archdiocesan program, Msgr. Kenny said.
