Julian Fletcher Funeral

ATLANTA--The funeral Mass for Julian H. Fletcher, a parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and past president of the St. Pius Home and School Association, was celebrated Wednesday, March 12.

The Mass was celebrated by Father Richard Lopez, a member of the religion department at St. Pius X High School, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A prayer service led by Father Richard Kieran, pastor of IHM, was held the preceding night. During the service Father Kieran encouraged the friends of Fletcher to share personal memories that celebrated his life.

Fletcher died Wednesday, March 5 of natural causes. He was 49.

While a parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Fletcher served on various pastoral councils and committees. In addition to these responsibilities he was a eucharistic minister, a member of St. Vincent de Paul and was heavily involved in various pro-life efforts. In 1994 Fletcher served on the board of Ulster-Project Atlanta, an ecumenical peace project to promote tolerance and friendship between Protestant and Catholic youth from Northern Ireland. It was the first time this project had been held in Georgia.

In conjunction with his parish involvement Fletcher was president of the St. Pius Home and School Association from 1992-93. He was also active in the St. Pius Arts Society and the athletic association and for numerous years coordinated a Dads' Day of Recollection. He continued his support of St. Pius and these various organizations once his daughters Elizabeth Anne, class of ?91 currently stationed in Pensacola, Fla., as a naval officer nurse, and Kathryn Marie, class of ?94 currently a junior in college in Lynchburg, Va., had graduated.

Fletcher, a native of Rome, Ga., was a member of the technical staff and project leader for Lucent Technologies. A 1970 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology he was an avid runner and an annual participant in the Peachtree Road Race. An Eagle Scout, he was valedictorian of Berry Academy in Rome where he served as editor of his high school yearbook.

In addition to his daughters, Fletcher is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Fletcher of Rome, and his brothers, James of Rome and Lamar of Oxford.
