ATLANTA--A group of 70 religious educators and school counselors
attended a Project Aware sexual abuse prevention program at Holy Cross
Church Nov. 15-16.
Sponsored by Catholic Social Services, the workshop entitled "Together
We Can Make A Difference: Education As The Beginning of Prevention"
described sexual abuse and its impact on an individual and family.
The program included workshops and a panel presentation in which
three sexual abuse survivors shared their personal struggles and
healing.
Workshop presenters included Jim Kantner, director of counseling
services for Catholic Social Services, Mary Ann Powell of the Fulton
County Department of Family and Children's Services, and Cynthia Davis
and Patty Sarmiento from the Georgia Council On Child Abuse.
Presenters discussed the pastoral response to a disclosure of sexual
abuse while explaining the legal reporting requirements.
