ATLANTA--As a follow-up to the report on new Catholic school funding
proposals which appeared in The Georgia Bulletin Oct. 31, the
archdiocese has provided a timetable for immediate and future
discussion of the proposal and its ramifications.
A draft of the proposal, including the key elements discussed at the
meeting with pastors, principals and finance representatives Oct. 21
at Holy Cross Church in Atlanta, will be considered by the full
Archdiocesan Schools Committee at a meeting in November. Also being
submitted to the Schools Committee is a possible timetable for moving
the discussion forward. Both are subject to the committee's review and
may change.
In addition the archdiocese has received extensive input since the
Oct. 21 meeting to be considered.
The timetable being considered is that the Schools Committee
finalize an initial recommendation to Archbishop John F. Donoghue by
Dec. 31, 1996; that the committee or smaller subcommittees take the
recommendation out into the community throughout the archdiocese for
input from priests, Religious, parents and the broader Catholic
community through June 30, 1997. During this phase it is also proposed
that the committee identify others with expertise in finances to
assist in further reflection on the various financial scenarios and
offer "a fresh view." Third it is proposed that the
committee consider all input and make a final recommendation to
Archbishop Donoghue by Sept. 30, 1997, including in its recommendation
a date of implementation or dates for phased-in implementation.
