Cancer Home Begins 40th Fundraiser

ATLANTA--The committee for the 40th annual Champagne Luncheon aims to sell 1,500 tickets to benefit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home. Attendance last year was 1,200.

The event, the only fund-raiser of the year for the free cancer home for the terminally ill, will take place Friday, Oct. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

Since 1939, the Hawthorne Dominican sisters have offered skilled and compassionate nursing care in a light-filled environment at 760 Washington St., SW, across the street from the Olympic stadium. The Hawthorne Dominican sisters are celebrating the 100th anniversary of their order this year.

More than 85 percent of the patients are not Catholic. Many have other serious medical problems as well as terminal cancer. The nine Hawthorne Dominicans who manage all aspects of patient care and administration receive no salary. Twenty-five lay persons who support their ministry are salaried.

The home is supported entirely by donations and by proceeds of the annual Champagne Luncheon. Tickets are $35 and may be obtained by calling Miriam Smith at (770) 946-8409.

Entertainment will be provided by Cecil Welch.

Gloria Harrison Stewart, chairman of the luncheon, has announced that honorary chairman Frank Maier of Maier and Berkele Jewelers has donated a ruby and diamond bracelet which will be given away as a door prize at the luncheon.
